About:

Abby Marie Puryear is a textile and graphic designer from Mechanicsville, Virginia. From a close-knit family, she spent much time with her grandmother, who taught her how to embroider. This led her to pursue a BFA in fibers at The Savannah College of Art and Design. Her specialties include embellishments, illustration, surface design, and materiality. Abby's main source of inspiration is conservation. She is interested in educating our youth about the environment, and helping them understand nature's beauty and wonders.

Artist Statement:

My studio practice is rooted in an exploration of childhood. The works strive to evoke a sense of freedom in children by encouraging individual expression while discovering the world. It is fun and whimsical, stemming from a child-like place, focusing on values, education, and life experience. Education is a vital component in a child's development so I strive to include a learning aspect in all bodies of work. Material examination is the center of my work, experimenting with materials like a child explores the world. By conveying the values I have learned from my family, I intend to express how I view the world. With the passage of time and the entry into new chapters of  my life, I am aware of the challenges that lie ahead. Nonetheless, I aim to turn hardships into opportunities to enlighten others through my experiences.
